EL SALVADOR VETERAN
The United States' involvement in El Salvador during the 1980s was significant, with the US providing billions of dollars in military and economic aid to the Salvadoran government and military. The US also trained Salvadoran soldiers, including the elite Batallón Atlácatl unit, and some US military officers were reportedly involved in making strategic decisions for the Salvadoran High Command. The US believed its assistance was justified because it considered the insurgents to be backed by the Soviet Union, and President Reagan saw El Salvador as a place to draw a line against communism.
