A Legacy of Courage and Excellence
The 761st Tank Battalion was activated in 1942 and became the first African-American armored unit to enter combat in World War II. Despite facing discrimination and segregation at home, the Black Panthers proved their worth on the battlefield, fighting with distinction across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Austria as part of General George S. Patton's Third Army.
General Patton personally addressed the battalion before their first combat mission, telling them: "Men, you're the first Negro tankers to ever fight in the American Army. I would never have asked for you if you weren't good. I have nothing but the best in my Army. I don't care what color you are as long as you go up there and kill those Kraut sons of bitches. Everyone has their eyes on you and is expecting great things from you. Most of all your race is looking forward to your success. Don't let them down and damn you, don't let me down!"
The 761st Tank Battalion more than lived up to those expectations. They fought for 183 consecutive days in combat, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of concentration camps, and the final push into Germany. The battalion earned numerous awards including a Presidential Unit Citation, and several members received individual decorations for valor. Staff Sergeant Ruben Rivers was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1997 for his extraordinary heroism.
Whether you want to honor the legacy of the 761st Tank Battalion, celebrate African-American military history, or appreciate the courage of those who fought for freedom abroad while facing discrimination at home, this t-shirt represents valor, determination, and the fight for equality.
