Garryowen. 7th Cavalry Regiment. Vietnam. Two Riders. One Ribbon.
The two cavalry riders and the Vietnam service ribbon on this premium 15oz white ceramic mug honor the 7th Cavalry Regiment "Garryowen" and the soldiers who carried that name into the jungles and highlands of Vietnam — from the first major engagement of the war at the Ia Drang Valley in 1965 to the final years of American combat operations. For the veteran who rode with Garryowen in Vietnam, this is the tribute that captures both the cavalry identity and the Vietnam service in a single, powerful design.
Garryowen. From the Little Bighorn to the Ia Drang.
The 7th Cavalry Regiment was formed in 1866 and adopted its nickname "Garryowen" from the Irish air that became its march tune. The regiment participated in some of the largest battles of the American Indian Wars, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. In Vietnam, the 7th Cavalry wrote its most celebrated modern chapter — the Battle of Ia Drang Valley in November 1965 was the first major engagement between US Army forces and the North Vietnamese Army, immortalized in the book and film We Were Soldiers Once… And Young. The Garryowen soldiers who fought at Ia Drang and throughout the Vietnam War earned the Vietnam service ribbon through years of combat in some of the war's most demanding terrain and conditions.
