El Salvador Advisory Mission (1979–1992)

For over a decade, the United States waged a quiet, largely unseen war in El Salvador — not with conventional forces, but with Special Forces advisors, military aid, and the determined effort to prevent another communist takeover in the Western Hemisphere.

The Conflict

El Salvador's civil war pitted the U.S.-backed government against the FMLN (Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front), a coalition of Marxist guerrilla groups supported by Cuba and Nicaragua. The war began in earnest in 1979 and would claim over 75,000 lives before the Chapultepec Peace Accords ended the fighting in 1992.

The American Mission

Congress capped U.S. military personnel at 55 advisors at any given time — but thousands of Green Berets, Special Forces trainers, and intelligence personnel rotated through El Salvador over the course of the conflict. Mobile Training Teams (MTTs) trained Salvadoran Army units in small-unit tactics, counterinsurgency, and human rights standards. The U.S. provided over $6 billion in military and economic aid over the course of the war.

The Operators

The men who served in El Salvador did so largely in the shadows — advising, training, and supporting a partner force in a complex and politically charged environment. Their professionalism and restraint under difficult circumstances helped shape the outcome of the conflict.

Wear the History

MIP Brand's El Salvador Advisory Mission collection honors the Special Forces soldiers and advisors who served in one of the Cold War's most consequential — and least remembered — conflicts. Each piece is crafted with premium materials and authentic unit insignia, built for those who carry history forward.
