31st Engineer Battalion. Cold War Ready. Combat Proven.

The 31st Engineer Combat Battalion has served the United States Army since 1940, when it was constituted as the 31st Engineer Company at Fort Belvoir, Virginia — the home of Army engineering. Redesignated as the 31st Engineer Combat Battalion on 15 December 1941, the unit carried its combat engineer mission through WWII and into the Cold War, where the engineer’s role became as much about deterrence as destruction: building fighting positions, emplacing obstacles, and ensuring that any enemy advance would be slowed, channeled, and defeated.

This mug honors the 31st Engineer Battalion’s Cold War service — the soldiers who maintained combat readiness through the decades of deterrence that defined the late 20th century. The Cold War was won by soldiers who showed up every day. The engineers built the conditions for that victory.

About the Unit

The 31st Engineer Battalion was originally constituted as the 31st Engineer Company on 1 July 1940 and activated at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. It was reorganized and redesignated as the 31st Engineer Combat Battalion on 15 December 1941. Combat engineers are the Army’s force multipliers — trained to fight as infantry while enabling maneuver through breaching, bridging, route clearance, and obstacle emplacement. During the Cold War, engineer battalions like the 31st played a critical role in NATO’s forward defense strategy, preparing the battlefield to slow and defeat any Warsaw Pact armored advance.
