First Dragoons. 1st Cavalry Regiment. Vietnam. Two Riders. One Ribbon.
The two cavalry riders and the Vietnam service ribbon on this premium 15oz white ceramic mug honor the soldiers of the 1st Cavalry Regiment who served in Vietnam — carrying the oldest mounted regiment lineage in the United States Army into one of its most defining modern conflicts. The regiment's special designation remains "First Regiment of Dragoons" to this day, and the veterans who served in Vietnam carried that heritage with them into every operation.
The Oldest Mounted Regiment in the US Army. From the Frontier to Vietnam.
The 1st Cavalry Regiment traces its antecedents to the early 19th century formation of the United States Regiment of Dragoons — the oldest mounted regiment in the Army, whose special designation "First Regiment of Dragoons" endures to this day. When another unit designated the 1st Cavalry Regiment was formed in 1855 and renumbered as the 4th Cavalry Regiment in 1861 based on seniority, the First Dragoons became the 1st Cavalry Regiment as the oldest mounted regiment in active service. In Vietnam, the regiment's squadrons carried that centuries-old cavalry tradition into the reconnaissance and security mission — screening, finding the enemy, and keeping the force informed across some of the war's most demanding terrain and conditions.
