The Story Behind the Shirt
When the Soviet Union sealed off West Berlin's roads, rails, and canals in June 1948, the Western Allies refused to surrender the city. American, British, Canadian, Australian, French, New Zealand, and South African aircrews answered the call — delivering nearly 2.3 million tons of supplies, two-thirds of it coal, across 278,228 flights. On May 12, 1949, the USSR lifted the blockade. The airlift had won.
