The Story Behind the Station
When Francisco Franco opened Spain's most strategically vital coastline to the United States, he set in motion a partnership that would define NATO's southern flank for decades. The first nuclear submarines arrived in 1964. By 1980, NS Rota was home to over 16,000 troops and their families — a city within a city, humming with purpose at the edge of the Atlantic.
The Cold War may have cooled, but the mission never stopped. Today, NS Rota spans 5,200 acres and remains one of the most operationally significant U.S. installations in Europe.
