Information Warfare Professionals
Intelligence Specialist (IS) is a US Navy enlisted rating within the Information Warfare community. The Intelligence Specialist rating was established in 1975 by combining the Photographic Intelligenceman (PT) rating (first established in 1957) and parts of the Yeoman (YN) rating. As of recent years, there are roughly 2,950 enlisted Intelligence Specialists in the US Navy.
Intelligence Specialists collect, analyze, and disseminate intelligence information. They prepare and present intelligence briefings, maintain intelligence databases, analyze imagery and signals intelligence, track potential threats, and provide intelligence support to commanders and operational forces. IS personnel are the Navy's intelligence experts, turning vast amounts of information into clear, actionable intelligence that supports decision-making at every level.
Critical Intelligence Analysis and Support
Intelligence Specialists work in a variety of environments—aboard ships, at shore commands, with special operations units, and at intelligence centers worldwide. They analyze intelligence from multiple sources including human intelligence (HUMINT), signals intelligence (SIGINT), imagery intelligence (IMINT), and open-source intelligence (OSINT). They track enemy forces, identify threats, assess capabilities, and provide the intelligence picture that enables successful operations.
IS personnel prepare intelligence reports, maintain situation displays, brief commanders and staff, operate intelligence systems and databases, and coordinate with other intelligence agencies. They must understand geopolitics, military capabilities, threat analysis, and intelligence collection methods. Their work requires analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to synthesize complex information into clear intelligence products.
Enabling Mission Success Through Intelligence
Intelligence Specialists provide the intelligence foundation that enables naval operations. They support strike planning, force protection, counterterrorism operations, and strategic decision-making. Their intelligence assessments help commanders understand the operational environment, identify threats, and exploit enemy vulnerabilities. IS personnel are essential to information superiority and mission success.
The Intelligence Specialist rating requires security clearances, analytical skills, and the ability to work with classified information. IS personnel must maintain the highest standards of integrity and operational security while providing timely, accurate intelligence to support operations worldwide.
Whether you are a Navy Intelligence Specialist, want to honor an IS-rated sailor, or appreciate the critical role that intelligence plays in naval operations, this t-shirt represents analytical excellence, dedication, and service in the Information Warfare community.
