Unit History

The 3rd Infantry Division, nicknamed the “Rock of the Marne,” was activated in 1917 and earned its name for stopping the German advance at the Second Battle of the Marne in World War I. It fought in World War II from North Africa to Germany, earning distinction for its toughness in combat. The division also served in Korea, Operation Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Headquartered at Fort Stewart, Georgia, it remains one of the U.S. Army’s most decorated and combat-tested divisions.
