The Pershing Missile Tab was worn as part of the shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) for U.S. Army units specifically tasked with supporting and operating the Pershing missile system. It was mainly associated with units such as the 56th Artillery Brigade and later the 56th Field Artillery Command, spanning from about 1970 until the missile system’s deactivation in 1991. The tab identified soldiers who belonged to units engaged with the Pershing missiles, which were a key part of U.S. nuclear deterrent forces during the Cold War.
