Unit History
- The 28th Infantry Division's "Keystone" Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) history traces to the Pennsylvania National Guard of 1879, when the keystone was adopted as the state's symbol. The division's official SSI became the red keystone in 1918, during World War I, though it had been used as a patch by individual units before that. The Germans later nicknamed the division the "Bloody Bucket" because of the red keystone, but the "Keystone" nickname stuck.
