Originally designated the 22nd Field Army Support Command, the 22nd Support Command received its new designation in time for its crucial support role in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Working at the operational level, the Command’s Combat Service Support Soldiers were responsible for the processing, staging, and movement of newly arrived U.S. and coalition forces. Using both U.S. and host-nation capabilities, the Command handled all aspects of processing troops into the combat theater, from sustainment necessities such as food and water to transportation and shelter. Additionally, the Command provided support for the subsequent thousands of Kurdish refugees displaced during the fighting in Iraq, and it also oversaw the detention of more than 60,000 Iraqi prisoners of war. The astonishing success of the operations bears witness to the truth of the unit's motto, "Good Logistics Is Combat Power."
