The "X 300" designation refers to the 300th Battalion, part of the 42nd Infantry Division. The 42nd Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Rainbow Division," was first formed in August 1917, shortly after the US entered World War I. It was sent to France in November of that year. The division was reactivated in 1943 for service in World War II.
