A Legacy of Courage Under Fire
The Battle of Hamburger Hill began on May 10, 1969, when the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, assaulted Dong Ap Bia, a heavily fortified mountain in the A Shau Valley near the Laotian border. What followed was ten days of brutal, close-quarters combat against entrenched North Vietnamese Army forces who had turned the mountain into a fortress.
The soldiers of the 3/187th Infantry made repeated assaults up the steep, jungle-covered slopes under intense enemy fire. The battle earned its nickname "Hamburger Hill" because the intense fighting seemed to grind up soldiers like a meat grinder. Despite heavy casualties, the battalion continued the assault, finally capturing the summit on May 20, 1969, after eleven assaults over ten days of fighting.
The battle became controversial when the hill was abandoned shortly after its capture, leading to questions about the cost versus the strategic value. However, the courage, determination, and fighting spirit displayed by the soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment remains unquestioned. They accomplished their mission under the most difficult combat conditions imaginable.
Whether you served with the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, fought at Hamburger Hill, want to honor a family member's Vietnam service, or appreciate the sacrifice of those who fought in this historic battle, this apparel represents courage, determination, and the warrior spirit.
