Troop D, 17th Cavalry was a US Army reconnaissance unit, most famously serving in Vietnam as a ground and air cavalry troop that performed long-range patrols and other special missions. Initially the ground reconnaissance element for the 199th Infantry Brigade, it later served under the 101st Airborne Division and other commands, performing missions deep in enemy territory. The "Long Range Patrol" in the name refers to their specialized reconnaissance role.
