The 84th Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Railsplitters," was formed in 1917 and served in both World Wars. In World War II, it landed in Normandy in November 1944 and fought its way through France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, playing a significant role in the Battle of the Bulge. The division advanced into Germany, captured Hannover in April 1945, and eventually made contact with Soviet forces at the Elbe River.
