The U.S. Army's 32nd Infantry Division, or "Red Arrow Division," had a distinguished history in World War II, becoming the first U.S. division to engage the Japanese in the Southwest Pacific, fighting for 654 days across New Guinea, Leyte, and the treacherous Villa Verde Trail in Luzon. The division earned numerous awards for its valor, including Medals of Honor, and continued as a National Guard unit, later serving in Operation Desert Storm and deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan as a brigade combat team. The division's shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) depicts a red arrow piercing a horizontal line, symbolizing its success in "piercing every enemy line" it faced.
