The 42nd Infantry Division ("Rainbow") is a National Guard division formed in 1917 from units across many states, earning its nickname from its widespread origins. As a U.S. Army Veteran X 300, the division's history is rich, encompassing combat service in World War I, where it endured over 14,000 casualties; World War II, during which it helped liberate the Dachau concentration camp; and the Global War on Terrorism. The division's Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or patch, is a rainbow with a demi-sun.
