The 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (502nd PIR), now known as the 502nd Infantry Regiment, was a unit of the 101st Airborne Division, famous for its participation in World War II and later service in other conflicts. Activated in 1942, the 502nd PIR played a crucial role in the Normandy landings (D-Day) and other major battles during WWII. Post-WWII, the regiment was reorganized and has seen action in the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
