The 25th Infantry Regiment, a "Buffalo Soldier" unit, was initially organized at Jackson Barracks, Louisiana, in April 1868, by consolidating the 39th and 40th Infantry Regiments. These regiments were composed of African American veterans of the Civil War. The regiment served in the American West, participating in the Indian Wars, and later in the Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War. The regiment was deactivated in 1947.
