The 179th Infantry Regiment "Tomahawks" served as an organic element of the 45th Infantry Division — the Oklahoma National Guard's "Thunderbird Division" — during the Korean War. The 45th ID deployed to Korea in December 1951 and served until the armistice in July 1953, fighting along the Main Line of Resistance in some of the war's most grueling defensive and offensive operations.
