More than 300 Taliban fighters assaulted Combat Outpost Keating — a remote, isolated position in the mountains near the town of Kamdesh. Eight soldiers gave their lives. Twenty-two were wounded. The outpost was nearly overrun.

On the morning of October 3, 2009, the Taliban launched a coordinated assault from the high ground, using rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, and small arms to overwhelm the outpost's defenses. The soldiers of the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry fought back with everything they had — calling in close air support, manning exposed positions under withering fire, and refusing to yield.
Staff Sergeant Clint Romesha and Specialist Ty Carter were both awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions that day — the highest military decoration the United States can bestow. The Battle of Kamdesh stands as a testament to the valor of American soldiers under impossible odds.
