The Women's Army Corps (WAC) — activated on 1 July 1943 — was the first time American women served in an official capacity within the United States Army. Unit History
Established as the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) on 15 May 1942, the WAC was converted to full active duty status under the Army of the United States on 1 July 1943. Under the pioneering leadership of Colonel Oveta Culp Hobby, WAC soldiers served with distinction across every theater of the war. The Corps was officially disbanded on 20 October 1978, when all WAC units were fully integrated into the U.S. Army — a testament to the enduring legacy of those who served.
