HISTORY

  • The history of the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps began with a formal establishment on June 3, 1916, following the need for professional expertise in animal care since the 18th century. Previously, Army veterinarians were not commissioned officers, but the 1916 act granted them officer status and the modern caduceus staff insignia. The Corps now performs a wide range of duties including food safety, military working animal care, and general veterinary care for service members' pets.
