Unit History — 3rd Ranger Battalion, Operation Just Cause
The United States launched Operation Just Cause on December 20, 1989, under President George H. W. Bush. The mission: depose General Manuel Noriega — de facto ruler of Panama and a U.S.-indicted narcotics trafficker. The 3rd Ranger Battalion was among the first boots on the ground, conducting airborne and air assault operations against key PDF (Panama Defense Forces) installations. By January 31, 1990, Noriega had surrendered, the PDF was dissolved, and President-elect Guillermo Endara was sworn into office. The operation stands as a defining chapter in Ranger history — swift, decisive, and precise.
