Operation Iraqi Freedom involved multiple "1st Bn" units, including the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines and 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, both of whom participated in the initial 2003 invasion, with the 1st Bn, 7th Marines fighting their way to Baghdad and An Najaf, while the 1st Bn, 2nd Marines fought in the battle of Nasiriyah. Another unit, the First Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (1st LAR Bn), was the first unit to cross the border into Iraq, fighting up to Tikrit. The 1st Battalion, 6th Marines was also involved, and other units like the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment were deployed during the conflict.
