Operation Iraqi Freedom - March 20, 2003
20 March 2003 marked the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom with preemptive airstrikes on Saddam Hussein's Presidential Palace and military targets followed by approximately 67,700 "boots on the ground" with 15,000 Navy personnel on ships in the region. OIF was authorized when Iraq was found to be in breach of U.N. resolutions.
The invasion of Iraq began with a rapid combined arms assault that demonstrated the overwhelming power and professionalism of the United States Army. Army combat units executed precision operations, seized key objectives, and toppled Saddam Hussein's regime in just weeks. But the initial victory was followed by years of counterinsurgency operations as soldiers fought against insurgents, sectarian militias, and eventually Al-Qaeda in Iraq and other terrorist organizations.
Combat Excellence and Multiple Deployments
Army Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veterans served in infantry units that conducted patrols and cleared insurgent strongholds, armor units that provided firepower and mobility, artillery units that supported combat operations, aviation units that dominated the battlefield, engineer units that cleared IEDs and built infrastructure, and support units that sustained combat operations. They fought in major battles including Fallujah, Ramadi, Sadr City, and countless other engagements across Iraq.
OIF soldiers faced a determined and adaptive enemy that used IEDs, suicide bombers, ambushes, and complex attacks. They conducted counterinsurgency operations, trained Iraqi Security Forces, secured the population, and worked to establish stability in Iraq. Many soldiers deployed multiple times, spending years away from their families in combat zones, demonstrating extraordinary dedication and sacrifice.
The Iraq War tested the Army in ways that few conflicts have. Soldiers adapted to counterinsurgency operations, mastered urban combat, and developed new tactics and technologies to defeat the enemy. They served with courage, professionalism, and dedication, earning their place among America's combat veterans.
Whether you are an Army Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veteran, want to honor a soldier who served in Iraq, or appreciate the sacrifice of those who fought in the Iraq War, this t-shirt represents service, courage, and the proud legacy of OIF combat veterans.
