Essentials - Building Combat Power in Vietnam

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is an engineer formation of the United States Army that has three primary mission areas: engineer regiment, military construction, and civil works. The day-to-day activities of the three mission areas are administered by a lieutenant general known as the commanding general/chief of engineers.

In Vietnam, Army engineers played a critical role in supporting combat operations and building the infrastructure required to sustain American forces. Engineer units constructed airfields, base camps, roads, bridges, and port facilities throughout South Vietnam. They cleared jungles to create fire support bases, built defensive positions, and constructed the roads and bridges that enabled the movement of troops and supplies.

Combat Engineers Under Fire

Army engineers in Vietnam faced the same dangers as combat troops—enemy fire, booby traps, mines, and ambushes—while performing their missions. They worked in difficult terrain and harsh conditions, often under fire, to complete projects that were essential to mission success. Engineers cleared minefields, built bridges under enemy fire, constructed roads through hostile territory, and performed the dangerous work of combat engineering.

The motto "Essentials" reflects the critical role that engineers play in enabling combat operations. Without the roads, bridges, airfields, and bases built by Army engineers, combat operations in Vietnam would not have been possible. Engineers built the infrastructure that sustained American forces and enabled them to operate throughout South Vietnam.

Whether you served with Army Engineer Command in Vietnam, want to honor a combat engineer who did, or appreciate the essential work that engineers perform to support the warfighter, this t-shirt represents dedication, skill, and the proud legacy of Army combat engineers who served in Vietnam.

Ideal for: Army Engineer Command Vietnam veterans, combat engineers, USACE supporters, military reunions, veterans' families, and everyday wear.

Army Engineer Command. Vietnam Service. Essentials. Building combat power.
