The 180th Assault Support Helicopter Company was activated on 1 October 1966 at Fort Benning and were assigned to the 10th Aviation Group, 37th Aviation Battalion. The 180th deployed to Viet Nam arriving in mid-November 1966. On 21 October 1966 the 180th ASHC was reassigned to the 1st Aviation Brigade, 17th Combat Aviation Group, 268th Combat Aviation Battalion and made their base at Dong Ba Thin. The Company had sixteen CH-47 Chinook Helicopter. The 180th Pilots and Air Crew Members were sent to the 179th Assault Support Helicopter Company at Pleiku and to aviation units of the 1st Cavalry Division Airmobile in the An Khe area to receive their in-county orientation and were declared operational ready in December 1, 1966.
