The 113th Cavalry Regiment originated as a unit of the Iowa National Guard, with its roots tracing back to the 19th-century Indian Wars. Iowa organized the 1st Cavalry Squadron in 1915, which included four troops and participated in the pursuit of Pancho Villa along the Mexican border. During World War I, elements of the squadron were reorganized into various units within the 34th Division, though they did not see overseas combat due to the war’s conclusion
