The B-24 Liberator - America's Heavy Bomber

The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was one of the most important American heavy bombers of World War II. The USAAF took delivery of its first B-24As in June 1941, with the B-24D becoming the first production model delivered in quantity in July 1942. By September 1944, the USAAF had 6,043 B-24 Liberators operating worldwide—more than any other American bomber.

The B-24 was assigned to every combat Air Force and served in every theater of World War II. With its high-altitude capability, long range, and substantial bomb load, the Liberator conducted strategic bombing missions against enemy industrial targets, military installations, and transportation networks. The aircraft's distinctive twin tail and high-aspect-ratio Davis wing made it instantly recognizable in the skies over Europe, the Pacific, and every combat zone where American forces fought.

22nd Bombardment Group - Pacific Theater Operations

The 22nd Bombardment Group served with distinction in the Pacific Theater as part of the 5th Air Force. The group's squadrons, including the 2nd Bombardment Squadron, flew B-24 Liberators on long-range bombing missions against Japanese forces throughout the Southwest Pacific, striking at enemy airfields, shipping, supply depots, and military installations from New Guinea to the Philippines and beyond.

Flying from bases in Australia, New Guinea, and later the Philippines, the 22nd Bombardment Group's aircrews faced some of the most challenging combat conditions of the war. They flew over vast expanses of ocean, through tropical weather, and against determined enemy opposition. The group participated in major campaigns including the New Guinea campaign, the liberation of the Philippines, and the final push toward Japan.

2nd Bombardment Squadron - Combat Legacy

The 2nd Bombardment Squadron, as part of the 22nd Bombardment Group, carried out critical bombing missions that helped turn the tide in the Pacific. B-24 crews flew through flak, engaged enemy fighters, and pressed home their attacks against heavily defended targets. They supported ground forces during amphibious landings, interdicted enemy supply lines, and struck at the infrastructure that sustained Japanese military operations.

The men who flew these missions—pilots, co-pilots, navigators, bombardiers, flight engineers, radio operators, and gunners—faced danger on every mission. They flew in cramped, unpressurized aircraft for hours over hostile territory, knowing that mechanical failure, enemy action, or the unforgiving Pacific Ocean could claim their lives. Their courage and determination helped secure victory in the Pacific and brought the war to an end.
