From Langley Field to the Pacific Theater
The 22nd Bombardment Group traces its roots to December 22, 1939, when it was formed as the 22nd Bombardment Group (Medium). The group became active on February 1, 1940, at Mitchell Field, New York, before moving to Langley Field, Virginia, in November 1940. On December 7, 1941, when Japanese carrier aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor, the 22nd Bombardment Group was thrust into a nation at war.
The group deployed to the Pacific Theater where it would serve with distinction throughout World War II as part of the 5th Air Force. Operating B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, the 22nd BG conducted strategic bombing missions, tactical strikes against enemy installations, anti-shipping operations, and support missions for Allied ground forces fighting across the Pacific islands.
B-24 Liberator Operations in the Pacific
The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was one of the most produced American combat aircraft of World War II, serving in every theater of operations. In the Pacific, B-24s like those flown by the 22nd Bombardment Group conducted long-range missions over vast expanses of ocean, striking at Japanese airfields, shipping, supply depots, and military installations across the Pacific islands.
The 19th Bomb Squadron, as part of the 22nd Bombardment Group, flew missions in challenging conditions—tropical heat, monsoon weather, and long over-water flights that tested both aircraft and crew. B-24 crews faced Japanese fighters, anti-aircraft fire, and the constant threat of mechanical failure far from friendly territory. Their missions contributed to the island-hopping campaign that brought Allied forces closer to Japan and ultimate victory.
5th Air Force - Pacific Air Power
The 5th Air Force was the principal U.S. Army Air Forces combat organization in the Southwest Pacific Theater during World War II. Under the command of General George Kenney, the 5th Air Force conducted strategic bombing, tactical air support, and air superiority missions that supported General Douglas MacArthur's campaign to liberate the Philippines and advance toward Japan.
Units like the 22nd Bombardment Group provided the heavy bomber capability that struck at Japanese logistics, destroyed enemy aircraft on the ground, and disrupted Japanese operations throughout the theater. From New Guinea to the Philippines, from the Dutch East Indies to the approaches to Japan itself, 5th Air Force bombers carried the war to the enemy.
