The Flying Tigers - Legendary Volunteer Pilots

The First American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Republic of China Air Force in 1941–1942, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, was composed of pilots from the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC), recruited under President Franklin Roosevelt's authority before Pearl Harbor and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault. Their Curtis P-40B Warhawk aircraft, marked with Chinese colors, flew under American control. Their mission was to bomb Japan and defend the Republic of China, but many delays meant the AVG flew in combat after the US and Japan declared war.

The Flying Tigers became legendary for their combat effectiveness and distinctive aircraft markings. Flying P-40 Warhawks painted with fierce shark mouth nose art, the AVG pilots achieved an impressive kill ratio against Japanese aircraft, despite being outnumbered and operating with limited resources. The unit's success was due to innovative tactics developed by Chennault, aggressive flying, and the determination of volunteer pilots who risked their lives to defend China.

P-40 Warhawk and Shark Mouth Legacy

The Flying Tigers' P-40 Warhawks featured the now-iconic shark mouth nose art that has become synonymous with the unit and the P-40 aircraft. This distinctive marking, inspired by similar designs used by RAF squadrons in North Africa, made the Flying Tigers' aircraft instantly recognizable and struck fear into enemy pilots.

Operating from bases in China and Burma, the Flying Tigers conducted air defense missions, bomber escort, and ground attack operations. They faced Japanese fighters and bombers in intense aerial combat, often against superior numbers. Despite the challenges, the AVG achieved remarkable success, officially credited with destroying nearly 300 Japanese aircraft while losing only a handful of their own pilots in combat.

The Flying Tigers operated for only seven months before being disbanded and incorporated into the U.S. Army Air Forces as the China Air Task Force in July 1942. However, their legacy endured. The unit's success, distinctive markings, and volunteer spirit made the Flying Tigers one of the most famous fighter units in history. The shark mouth design became an enduring symbol of American fighter aviation.
