The Old Reliables in Vietnam
The 9th Infantry Division ("Old Reliables") is an inactive infantry division of the United States Army. It was created as the 9th Division during World War I, but never deployed overseas. In later years, it would become an important unit of the U.S. Army during World War II and the Vietnam War.
In Vietnam, the 9th Infantry Division deployed in December 1966 and established its headquarters at Bearcat Base Camp. The division operated primarily in the Mekong Delta and the areas surrounding Saigon, conducting combat operations against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces in some of the most challenging terrain in Vietnam—rice paddies, swamps, rivers, and dense vegetation.
