Activated on 23 May 1942 as the 5th Tank Group (Colored) at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, and moved to Camp Hood, Texas, on 15 September 1943, and assigned to the Tank Destroyer Center. Redesignated as the 5th Armored Group (Colored) on 22 November 1943. Inactivated on 1 December 1944. Formed of the 758th, 761st, and 784th Tank Battalions.
