The 8th Battalion, 4th Artillery, was activated in 1967 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and deployed to Vietnam in July 1967 as a 175mm gun battalion. Part of the I Field Force Vietnam, it operated the M107 self-propelled 175mm gun, which was a long-range weapon used for strategic targets, counter-battery fire, and supporting ground troops. The battalion was involved in numerous engagements, served in various locations across Vietnam, and also engaged in training the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN).
