The Purple Heart is a U.S. military decoration awarded to service members wounded or killed in action against an enemy. It originated as the Badge of Military Merit, established by George Washington in 1782, and was revived in 1932. The Purple Heart is awarded for wounds received in action, and also posthumously for those killed in action or who die of wounds. The Vietnam War saw a significant increase in Purple Heart recipients due to a change in eligibility criteria.
