The 249th Engineer Battalion, previously known as the 442d Battalion, was redesignated on June 25, 1952. It was stationed at Gerszewski Barracks in Knielingen, Karlsruhe, Germany, under the 18th Engineer Brigade during the Cold War. The battalion provided construction support to USAREUR (U.S. Army Europe) elements in Germany. In March 1960, it deployed to France for airfield missions and returned to Karlsruhe in 1965. The unit was later re-designated as the 249th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy) on June 30, 1975.
