In one of the most ferocious close-quarters engagements of the Civil War, the men of the 1st Mississippi Infantry (African Descent) — many of them formerly enslaved, fighting for the first time under arms — held their ground against a Confederate assault that outnumbered and overwhelmed them at every turn. They fought with bayonets and rifle butts when ammunition ran out. They did not break.
