The 16th Armored Division was activated on July 15, 1943, and entered combat on May 5, 1945. It arrived in France on February 11, 1945, and was attached to the Third Army. The division played a significant role in the assault on Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, marking the farthest point of American penetration into the country during World War II. It was involved in a security and training mission in Nurnberg, Germany, starting on April 28, 1945.
