The "Triple Nickles" was the nickname of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, the first all-black paratrooper unit in the U.S. Army during World War II. They earned their name from their numerical designation (555) and the three buffalo nickels that were part of the 92nd Infantry Division's insignia. The unit's history is marked by both its pioneering status as an African American airborne unit and its unique role in fighting forest fires in the Pacific Northwest during the war.
