Sergeant First Class - Retired Italic

The rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC) in the United States Army has had a somewhat complicated history:

1890–1920: The rank of SFC existed, but was eliminated during a simplification of enlisted ranks.

1948: The rank was restored to replace technical sergeant

Today: SFC is a senior non-commissioned officer rank in the military and other uniformed organizations.

When describing a retired service member, the word "Retired" should be capitalized and placed before the rank and name. For example, "Retired U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Joe Smith".
